Description
Thermocoat S Structural Steel Fire Protection
Thermoguard Thermocoat S is an intumescent coating for structural steel and cast iron. It is designed to help protect load-bearing steelwork by slowing the rise in steel temperature during a fire.
When exposed to heat, the coating expands to form an insulating char layer. This helps the steel retain its strength for longer, giving valuable time for evacuation, fire response and structural protection.
What It Does
- Helps protect structural steel and cast iron from rapid heat build-up.
- Can provide up to 90 minutes fire resistance when specified correctly.
- Forms an insulating char layer during a fire.
- Supports fire safety requirements for load-bearing steel elements.
- Can be used as part of a complete Thermoguard steel protection system.
Why Choose Thermocoat S?
- Protects vital steelwork: helps delay the point at which steel loses strength in a fire.
- Professional fire protection: suitable for commercial, industrial, public sector and residential projects.
- Flexible application: can be applied by brush, roller or airless spray.
- Specification support: Thermoguard can help confirm the correct film thickness and system build-up for your project.
- Certificate support: supply documentation may be available after correct application and submission of project details.
Where It Can Be Used
- Interior structural steel
- Universal beams
- Steel columns
- Open section steelwork
- Cast iron elements
- Suitable external exposed steel where water does not pond or collect
Ideal For
- Commercial buildings
- Industrial units
- Schools and public buildings
- Residential developments
- Refurbishment projects
- Steel protection upgrades
Fire Performance
- Can provide up to 90 minutes fire resistance when used to the correct specification.
- Tested for structural steel fire protection requirements.
- Certified to BS 476 Part 21 as stated in the product information.
- Correct surface preparation, primer choice and coating thickness are essential.
- Always follow the project-specific Thermoguard specification before application.
Application Benefits
- Can be applied by brush, roller or airless spray.
- Airless spray is recommended for faster coverage and a smoother finish on larger projects.
- Suitable for use with compatible primers and approved decorative topcoats.
- Designed for professional fire protection work where reliable specification is important.
Surface Preparation
- Steel should be clean, dry and free from rust, millscale, grease and loose material.
- A suitable primer may be required before applying Thermocoat S.
- The correct dry film thickness depends on the steel size, section factor and required fire rating.
- Do not guess coverage or coating thickness. Ask Thermoguard for a project specification if unsure.
You May Also Need
- Suitable steel primer depending on the condition and environment of the steel.
- Thermoguard Flame Retardant Topcoat where a decorative or protective finish is required.
- Technical specification advice before ordering for load-bearing steel projects.
Good To Know
- Fire protection depends on the full system, not just the basecoat.
- Film thickness must match the steel specification.
- Application conditions such as temperature and humidity affect performance and curing.
- External use must be assessed carefully, especially where steel may be exposed to standing water.
- For certification support, keep full records of the products used and the application details.
