Description
Asbestos Protect
Protection Paints Asbestos Protect is a specialist asbestos encapsulating coating designed to seal and secure rigid, sound asbestos-containing materials in buildings where removal may be impractical, disruptive or unnecessary.
The coating forms a flexible smoke and flame retardant barrier that helps lock asbestos fibres into place while also improving surface fire performance. It is designed for asbestos-containing materials that are stable, non-friable and not subject to regular mechanical damage.
Asbestos Protect is commonly used in refurbishment and compliance upgrade projects where safe encapsulation is preferred over costly asbestos removal programmes.
What It Does
- Encapsulates rigid asbestos-containing materials.
- Helps prevent the release of airborne asbestos fibres.
- Creates a smoke and flame retardant protective barrier.
- Bonds residual asbestos fibres to the substrate surface.
- Provides a decorative protective finish in matt or eggshell appearance.
Why Choose Asbestos Protect?
- Safer asbestos management: designed to encapsulate rather than disturb stable asbestos materials.
- Flexible protective coating: accommodates normal building movement without cracking.
- Fire performance benefits: incorporates smoke and flame retardant technology.
- Low odour water-based formula: easier to apply internally in occupied buildings.
- Decorative finish options: available in thousands of colours to improve appearance after encapsulation.
Where It Can Be Used
- Asbestos cement wall sheets
- Ceiling panels and soffits
- Rigid asbestos ducts and pipework
- External asbestos wall sheets
- Fascia and soffit boards
- Concealed asbestos-containing materials
- Areas difficult to access for full asbestos removal
Ideal For
- Asbestos management programmes
- Commercial refurbishment projects
- Industrial buildings
- Schools and public buildings
- Plant rooms and service areas
- Controlled asbestos containment works
- Buildings requiring safer asbestos encapsulation solutions
Fire Performance
- Designed to achieve BS EN Class B s1 d0 performance.
- Compliant with Class 0 fire performance standards.
- Helps suppress smoke and flaming droplets during fire conditions.
- Suitable for use on bare or painted non-combustible surfaces.
- Can be used alongside Thermoguard fire protection systems where specified.
How It Works
- The coating forms a continuous flexible sealing membrane over asbestos-containing materials.
- This membrane helps prevent loose fibres from becoming airborne.
- Specialist additives help improve smoke and flame retardant performance.
- The coating permanently bonds residual fibres remaining after partial asbestos removal.
- The finished system provides both encapsulation and decorative improvement.
Finish & Colour Options
- Available in matt and eggshell finishes.
- Over 4,000 RAL, BS and NCS colours available.
- Designed to improve appearance of previously industrial asbestos surfaces.
- Suitable for commercial and industrial refurbishment projects.
Application Information
- Normally applied as a 2 coat system.
- First coat should typically be thinned approximately 10% with clean water.
- Second coat applied undiluted after drying.
- Suitable for brush, roller and low-pressure HVLP spray application.
- Ensure a continuous uninterrupted film is created across the surface.
Surface Preparation
- Only apply to rigid, stable asbestos-containing materials.
- Surfaces should be cleaned using approved asbestos-safe methods.
- Use Type H vacuum systems or wet cleaning techniques where appropriate.
- Do not mechanically disturb asbestos surfaces during preparation.
- Always follow current asbestos handling legislation and safety procedures.
Health & Safety Guidance
- Suitable PPE should always be worn during asbestos-related works.
- Disposable overalls, gloves, eye protection and filtered masks are recommended.
- All contaminated materials should be disposed of through approved waste facilities.
- Only trained and competent personnel should assess asbestos-containing materials.
- Always comply with current asbestos regulations and local authority guidance.
Good To Know
- This product is intended for rigid, sound asbestos-containing materials only.
- Friable or damaged asbestos may require specialist removal instead of encapsulation.
- Coverage rates are critical to achieving encapsulation and fire performance.
- The coating is water-based, solvent free and low odour.
- Thermoguard may provide Certificates of Supply following correct specification and application.
Need To Secure Existing Asbestos Without Major Removal Work?
Many buildings still contain stable asbestos materials that can remain safely in place when professionally encapsulated. Asbestos Protect is designed to help secure these surfaces while improving appearance and reducing the risk of fibre release and flame spread.
Need Advice On Asbestos Encapsulation?
Different asbestos-containing materials require different treatment approaches. If you are unsure whether encapsulation is appropriate for your project, contact the Thermoguard technical team and ensure all asbestos assessments are carried out by qualified professionals.
