Description

Timbercoat Intumescent 30/60 Basecoat

Thermoguard Timbercoat Intumescent 30/60 Basecoat is a specialist intumescent coating designed to provide certified 30 or 60 minute fire resistance for timber, plywood, MDF and wood-derivative surfaces.

Forming the primary fire protection layer within the Thermoguard Timbercoat system, this advanced water-based coating reacts during fire exposure by expanding into a thick insulating char barrier that helps protect timber against flame spread and heat penetration.

The system is designed for both decorative and fire-critical timber environments where achieving recognised fire certification is essential.

What It Does

  • Provides the primary intumescent layer within the Timbercoat fire protection system.
  • Expands during fire conditions to create an insulating char barrier.
  • Helps protect timber against flame spread and heat penetration.
  • Allows timber systems to achieve 30 or 60 minute fire resistance when specified correctly.
  • Suitable for timber walls, ceilings, panels and board systems.

Why Choose Timbercoat Intumescent 30/60 Basecoat?

  • Certified fire protection: designed for projects requiring 30 or 60 minute fire resistance.
  • Modern EN fire standards: achieves EN Class B s1 d0 and Class 0 performance.
  • Smooth decorative finish potential: designed to work beneath decorative Thermoguard topcoats.
  • Excellent adhesion: suitable for many timber and wood-derivative substrates.
  • Water-based technology: lower odour and easier internal application.

Where It Can Be Used

  • Interior timber walls and ceilings
  • Plywood and MDF surfaces
  • Wood derivative boards
  • Timber panelling systems
  • Commercial timber interiors
  • Public buildings and communal areas
  • Timber compartmentation systems

Ideal For

  • Schools and colleges
  • Hotels and hospitality projects
  • Commercial refurbishment works
  • Public buildings
  • High occupancy environments
  • Timber fire upgrade projects
  • Architectural timber installations

Fire Performance

  • Can achieve 30 or 60 minute fire resistance within approved systems.
  • Tested to BS EN Class B s1 d0 standards.
  • Compliant with Class 0 requirements.
  • Designed to reduce flame spread and smoke hazards on timber surfaces.
  • Certification depends on the correct specification, coverage and topcoat system.

How The System Works

  • During fire exposure, the coating rapidly expands.
  • The expanded char layer insulates the timber beneath.
  • This barrier helps slow heat penetration and combustion.
  • The matching SFR or Safewood topcoat completes the decorative and protective finish.
  • The complete system is designed to maintain fire compartmentation performance.

Compatible Topcoats

  • Thermoguard Smoke & Flame Retardant SFR Dualcoat for decorative smoke and flame retardant finishing.
  • Thermoguard Safewood SFR where specified within approved systems.
  • The same colour should normally be selected in both basecoat and topcoat for best appearance.
  • Topcoat systems are required to complete certification.

Application Information

  • Suitable for brush, roller or spray application.
  • Touch dry in approximately 1 hour under normal conditions.
  • Normally overcoatable after approximately 4 hours.
  • Apply only at the specified coverage rates.
  • Do not overspread the product as this may compromise certification.

Surface Preparation

  • Surfaces must be clean, dry and free from grease, smoke residues and contamination.
  • Loose or unstable coatings should be removed back to a sound edge.
  • Hard glossy surfaces should be lightly abraded before application.
  • Repair damaged substrates using suitable fillers before coating.
  • Seal water-stain risks using compatible stain-blocking primers where required.

Environmental Conditions

  • Recommended application temperature range: 8°C to 30°C.
  • Relative humidity should normally remain below 75%.
  • Surfaces should remain free from condensation during application and curing.
  • Ensure substrate temperature remains above dew point conditions.

Good To Know

  • This product cannot normally be used without a Thermoguard application schedule and specification.
  • Coverage rates are critical to achieving fire certification.
  • The product is tintable to undercoat shades ready for matching topcoats.
  • The complete Timbercoat system must be installed correctly for certified performance.
  • Certificates of Supply may be available for qualifying projects following correct application.

Need Certified Fire Protection For Timber Surfaces?

Many decorative timber coatings only improve surface flame spread. Timbercoat Intumescent 30/60 Basecoat is designed for projects requiring true compartmentation fire resistance with certifiable 30 or 60 minute performance when used within the approved Thermoguard system.

Need A Timber Fire Protection Specification?

Timber fire protection systems require accurate coverage calculations and application schedules to achieve certification. If you are unsure which Timbercoat system is suitable for your project, contact the Thermoguard technical team before ordering.
