Description

Thermoguard Wallcoat Insulating Basecoat

Thermoguard Wallcoat Insulating Basecoat is a specialist intumescent coating designed to upgrade painted and multi-layer painted walls and ceilings to modern fire safety standards.

Developed for refurbishment and compliance upgrade projects, the coating forms the first stage of the Thermoguard Wallcoat system. During fire exposure, the intumescent technology expands to form a heat-resistant insulating barrier that helps slow flame spread and reduce smoke hazards.

The system is particularly suited to older buildings where multiple historic paint layers may increase fire risk and complete wall replacement would be disruptive or impractical.

What It Does

  • Provides an intumescent insulating layer for walls and ceilings.
  • Helps upgrade older painted surfaces to modern fire standards.
  • Controls surface flame spread during fire conditions.
  • Helps reduce smoke, flaming droplets and particulates.
  • Works beneath Thermoguard WallGuard Smoke & Flame Retardant Topcoat.

Why Choose Thermoguard Wallcoat Insulating Basecoat?

  • Ideal for refurbishment projects: suitable over multiple historic paint layers without complete removal.
  • Modern EN fire standards: designed to achieve EN Class B s1 d0 and Class 0 performance.
  • Smoke suppression support: helps reduce smoke and flaming droplet hazards during fire conditions.
  • Smooth decorative finish potential: designed for overcoating with decorative Thermoguard topcoats.
  • Water-based technology: low odour and easier to apply internally.

Where It Can Be Used

  • Previously painted plaster walls
  • Plasterboard walls and ceilings
  • Artex coated surfaces
  • Brick and concrete walls
  • Communal corridors and stairwells
  • Schools, hospitals and care homes
  • Commercial and residential buildings

Ideal For

  • Fire safety refurbishment projects
  • Social housing upgrades
  • Public buildings
  • Hotels and hospitality environments
  • Schools and educational buildings
  • Healthcare environments
  • Older buildings with multiple historic paint layers

Fire Performance

  • Designed to achieve EN Class B s1 d0 performance.
  • Compliant with Class 0 standards within approved systems.
  • Helps control surface spread of flame on walls and ceilings.
  • Provides smoke suppression and flaming droplet control.
  • Can form part of 30 or 60 minute wall and ceiling systems where specified.

How The System Works

  • The basecoat expands during fire exposure to create an insulating char barrier.
  • This barrier helps protect the substrate beneath against heat and flame spread.
  • The matching WallGuard Smoke & Flame Retardant Topcoat completes the decorative finish.
  • Together, the system helps improve fire performance on older painted surfaces.
  • The complete system is designed to upgrade potentially high-risk wall and ceiling finishes.

Compatible Topcoat

  • Thermoguard WallGuard Smoke & Flame Retardant should be used as the finishing coat.
  • Available in matt and eggshell finishes.
  • Two coats of topcoat may be required in dark colours, damp or high-wear areas.
  • The full Wallcoat system is required to achieve tested certification.

Application Information

  • Apply one full coat at the specified coverage rate.
  • Suitable for brush, roller or spray application.
  • Touch dry in approximately 1 hour under normal conditions.
  • Normally overcoatable after approximately 4 hours.
  • Do not overspread the coating, as this compromises fire performance and certification.

Surface Preparation

  • Surfaces must be clean, dry and free from grease, smoke residue and contamination.
  • Loose or unstable coatings should be removed back to a sound edge.
  • Hard glossy paints should be lightly abraded before application.
  • Seal water stains using suitable stain-blocking primers where necessary.
  • Repair damaged areas using quality fillers before coating.

Suitable Substrates

  • Plaster
  • Plasterboard
  • Artex
  • Brickwork
  • Concrete
  • Previously painted internal walls and ceilings

Environmental Conditions

  • Recommended application temperature range: 8°C to 30°C.
  • Relative humidity should normally remain below 75%.
  • Surfaces should remain free from condensation during application and curing.
  • Substrate temperature should remain above dew point conditions.

Good To Know

  • This product forms part of a complete Thermoguard Wallcoat system.
  • WallGuard Smoke & Flame Retardant Topcoat is required to complete certification.
  • Coverage rates are critical to achieving fire classification performance.
  • Suitable for upgrading many previously painted surfaces without complete paint removal.
  • Project-specific specifications and Certificates of Supply may be available for qualifying projects.

Need To Upgrade Older Painted Walls Without Major Disruption?

Many older buildings contain multiple historic paint layers that may increase flame spread risks. Thermoguard Wallcoat Insulating Basecoat is designed to help upgrade these surfaces to modern fire standards without the cost and disruption of removing all previous coatings.

Need Help Specifying A Wallcoat System?

Different substrates, paint conditions and fire performance targets may require different Wallcoat specifications. If you are unsure which Thermoguard wall protection system is suitable for your project, contact the technical team before ordering.
